Building Class Communities

Ms Marlene

I am always looking for new and exciting ways to build my class community. It is so important for educators to make this crucial step in order to create a supportive and nurturing learning environment. This central element of teaching should start on the first day of school and continue to grow each day throughout the school year.

Here I will display some of my past collaborative efforts of building classroom communities. Pictured above is a tree with leaves made from the traced hands of students. On each 'leaf', students have brilliantly depicted the words and ideas that represent them. The tree represents our growing community within the classroom.

This was an exciting project made with much collaborative effort from students. To start, I simply taped 4x4 coloured papers together, with each colour representing a different area. Black for space, light blue for the sky, green for earth, and dark blue for the water. I asked students to create something for a section of the poster. I was highly impressed with the students' creativity, and we had a wonderful time working together to create a beautiful piece of artwork for our classroom.
