Teaching Philosophy

The above quote resonates with my teaching philosophy. I strongly believe that quality educatian mindfully incorporates elements of discovery into the learning process.

I have consistently found that encouraging curiosity and discovery greatly helps students to create meaningful connections to their learning.

When a lesson successfully encourages student engagement and eagerness to learn more about a topic,       I recognize a healthy growth mindset and feel confident in the progression of student learning.

I also strongly believe in the importance of creating safe and supportive learning environments. Safe and supportive learning environments carefully consider student well-being in the pursuit of academic success.

Educators must consider several factors in the general well-being of their students in order to best address their students' learning needs. These factors importantly include the creation of a safe and accepting classroom community which promotes healthy relationships and a positive sense of self.

Safe and supportive learning environments also carefully incoporate active mental health support for learners.

As Educators, our ultimate goal is for our students to reach their learning goals and to demonstrate their learning and understanding. I have illustrated this goal on the left as a healthy, blooming flower. We must importantly consider that this flower will need to be carefully cared for and have its specific needs met in order to successfully bloom.

Our flower requires sunlight, represenative of the communication of clear expectations and the consideration of our students' prior and future learning goals.

Of course, our flower also needs nurturing water, represenative of the care and nourishment of carefully incorporating differentiation and feedback.

This flower also requires a rich foundation of soil, representative of curriculum expectation and use of the backwards design model. Out of this, our flower can grow.

Our flower will take root in the exploration of Big Ideas and Learning Goals, and will grow leaves through helpful incorporation of peer and self-assessment.

The flower's stem represents Success Criteria, leading to the ultimate goal of students reaching their learning goals and demonstrating their understanding.

The garden stones represent safe and supportive learning environments, protecting the flower and encouraging its growth by creating an environment of care, respect, trust and integrity.

"I used to think that teachers were responsible for simply helping students to reach their learning goals;

But now I know that teachers are responsible for creating a learning environment that encourages student progress and development".

My teaching philosophy carefully considers the incorporation of the OCT's Ethical Standards of care, respect, trust, and integrity. These elements are central in the creation of a healthy learning environment.

My teaching philosophy also importantly considers the OCT's Standards of Practice, in which educators take responsible measures within themselves to ensure that they hold their own teaching practice to high standards.

This importantly incvolves a commitment to students and their learning, as well as ongoing professional learning.
