An important mathematical skill for grade 2 is the ability to represent a larger number in terms of 10's, 5's and 1's. For example, 26= 10 + 10 + 5 +1.
Unfortunately, many students do not consider mathematics as a preferred subject. In order to help change this, I find it helpful to incorporate more engaging elements into math class.
For this class, I incorporated the element of cutting and gluing; an activity that can often be exciting for second-grade students. Optionally, you can also have your students colour the images before cutting and gluing them onto their sheet. Alternatively, you can further incorporate visual arts by having your students draw the images.
In this lesson 10’s, 5’s, and 1’s are each represented by a different image. The students are asked to represent different numbers by cutting out these images and gluing them onto their sheets.
Here is the template that I used during this lesson with my students:

Try it for yourself and see how fun mathematics can be!
